Need advice on a good shareware or freeware music editor

I need a program that will make writing sheet music on staff paper easier. I'm looking for something that's like a word processor for notes. Does anyone know of such a shareware or freeware program that actually works?

I use powertab editor. It's a good, free software that lets you enter midi information in tablature form. I found it easy enough to use. Otherwise, trying searching "freeware midi editor" or something like that in google and you might find something else.

Thanks, but that's not what I was looking for. What I need is something that will let me easily write actual sheet music, like the kind keyboardists, horn players, vocalists, and other musicians are used to following. I'm particularly looking to create graphic files I can drop into worship liturgy sheets for the congregation to use that shows them the tunes of songs.

I already have the music written out for the drummer. It's a sheet of paper that says "Pick up sticks. Hit drums. Repeat as needed."

Ahh, i get you now.

I typed "freeware score editor" (without the brackets) into google and found a few things that might do the job for you. But I don't know about your level of technical expertise with them. So try a few and see which one you like. I did find one that sounded good called Finale Notepad, which may be worth signing up for to get the download from the official site. I don't know though.

Anyway, try that search and you should find something.

Again, my thanks. The thing is, I have done the searching you describe, and I came up with lots and lots of choices. Too many choices, to be blunt about it. What I'm asking for is whether anyone can help me separate the wheat from the chaff based on their own personal experiences with any of them.

I do plan to test drive a few of them on my own. If I find one that I think is a real winner, I'll share a review with everyone else.
