I like to add a little to this conversation.

It has been mentioned that it is hard to understand how Judas couldn't understand who Jesus really was. Well, that is easy for us to say from our vantage point. We know the details and the outcome and we have the Bible as a resource - many of us have heard the stories since our childhood. The disciples didn't have the benefit of that. For them, God coming as a man was a radical concept (it still is a radical concept). Try to imagine how you would have reacted in their place. I think we all would have had a hard time grasping the reality of it. The twelve all had problems truly understanding. When Jesus was crucified, they thought it was over. Even though Jesus had told them ahead of time what would happen. When you think about it, it is a strange idea. Never happened before, never will again. A one time unique event. If we had been in their place, would we have understood it any better? I think not.

Now about Judas...
At the last supper, Jesus dips the bread and gives it to Judas. This was what a host did to honor a guest in that culture. I believe that, in doing this, Jesus was saying to Judas, "There is still hope, I know what you are going to do and there is forgiveness even for this." But instead of seeking forgiveness, Judas, when confronted with his guilt, committed suicide. Satan attacks us the same way. He reminds us of all the wrong we have done, and tell us that God will never forgive us. But God says, "Come, you are precious to me, and I payed the price for your forgiveness with my blood." Ain't God great!

Blessings,

Jay
