I've been experimenting with notes out of key in my licks just to make things sound cool.
I thought I would share some, kind of in the hopes that some of you will share some too LoL.
Anyways,
I play this starting on about the 15th fret of High E string (usually).
Note : Im too lazy for making tabs :P so I just put the numbers of the scale to show the lick. The 8th note of scale is just the 1st played on the higher octave. Timing is up to you..add trills and differentiating note lengths as you will...they are kind of foolproof cuz these are just toned down versions of the real licks (Sorry I just don't have the patience to type out 300 notes with one simple pattern )).
Take Aeolian mode:
8, 8, 8 7, 8, 6, 8, 5 8, 4, 8, 2 , b8, 1
The above is a pretty basic descent but the accidental b8 adds a more emotive feeling..
This is also cool.. It sounds good to me in any scale but I usually play in Aeolian or Harmonic Minor (Just Aeolian with #7th)
8, 7, 6, 5, 7, 6, 5, 4, 6, 5, 4, 3, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, (low)7, (low) 5, (low) 6, 1, b5, 5, b8, 8
If anyone trys these out, tell me what you think...
If there's some way I can make it easier to read them I will try...Maybe actually put some time into making out them bloomin' tabs
Anyways, does anyone else got some cool licks or techniques???
Please SHARE with me!!!
Thanks

I am not so sure I understand your notation there Kane, but I get the idea. I have been doing some of that too by using the out of scale notes as a grace note. Usually by making a mistake and trying to quickly correct it i'll just slide up (or down) into the note I want. Sometimes it sounds really bad though!
Something I have been exprimenting with more is double stops and quick chords on the 2,3,4 string during a riff to give the riff a grittier sound. A good example of where I am trying this would be the song comfortably numb. |

Yeah, I don't understand your notation either.

Ok look at it like this,
Aoelian is the same scale as playing from A to A on a piano without touching any black keys..
The numbers simply tell which note of the scale to play (which can be any one in this case). So for example in Aolean if you were playing in A minor the numbers would mean the same as Follows:
1=A
2=B
3=C
4=D
5=E
6=F
7=G
8=A
If you played Ionian in Cmaj (Just to keep things simple) then the numbers would be like follows:
1=C
2=D
3=E
4=F
5=G
6=A
7=B
8=C
Any better??

flat 5, flat 7, raised nine, all good extensions.
These altered notes can also serve as "pivot" notes to modulate to a new key
