Who is your favorite bassist and give reasons why is the question here.
The biggest influences on me were: Paul McCartney, Jaco Pastorius, Dave Hope (Kansas), Chris Squire (Yes), Sting, Michael Manring, Victor Wooten(Bela Fleck) and Chuck Rainey(Steely Dan) to name a few. Each of these fine musicians have a signature style that has been challenging and inspiring and have helped to shape my own sound and style. I believe that there is much to be learned from players with different musical backgrounds as they each have perspectives that might not seen or explored by others.
McCartney and Sting have a melodic and sometimes minimalistic approach that is very supportive of the song adding a dynamic that is not the norm yet very effective. Chris Squire and Dave Hope play progressive rock with a pick, Mr. Squire plays lines that are very guitar-like and busy while Mr. Hope tends to stay solidly in the chord with root and arpeggios. Mr. Manring, Wooten and Rainey just plain blow my mind and keep me nice and humble! |

| Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Although I don't listen to much bass. I like him more because he is an interesting performer. Does some entertaining stuff on some clips. But one of my bassist mates loves Flea's work. And it is good guitar work. |

| Bruce Thomas who played bass with Elvis Costello and the Attractions-like Sting and Sir Paul he played simpler melodic parts but oh, what parts. The bass line on "Watching the Detectives" slays me every time. |

I'd also like to add that Billy Sheehan is an incredible bassist. Particularlly since he can keep up with Steve Vai.
I also would like to pick up David LaBruyere's album. He has done some good work with John Mayer during his career. |

Victor Wooten is fantastic. He has a couple of solo cd's that are way up there in my top 10 cd list.
I would place him in my 'show-off' player list, I don't think I could record a worship CD with him slapping and freaking out all over the place. |

Charles Mingus is definitely the bass player who made me realize how much can be done with the bass. From composition to improvisation, the bass can be so much more than just a rhythm instrument.
Also Bootsy, but for different reasons... |

Flea from RHCP -Great Performer, plus I love the Back to the Future Trilogy
Sting from The Police- Same as above.
Justin Chancellor from Tool - My favorite band, Justin and Carrey (the drummer) are phenomenal together.
Les Claypool from Primus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5XeVLJeMdE (solo)
Great technique.
Cliff Burton http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O9zMnwD65Q
He was the Golden Touch for Metallica, without him they were never quite as good. |
