After a few years of owning my homemade 4x10 speaker, I FINALLY decided to get some speaker grills for it....I've been avoiding spending a measley few bucks on them for several years now...

Even though our church has about 30 High-strung kids running around so my bare-naked speakers are always in constant danger of being...tampered with.

I just hate spending money on stuff that doesn't make an actual...difference

Same thing with buying microphones, hard drives, sound boards and stuff like that...it's just stuff so you can keep doing what you are already doing, but it doesn't like make any difference..

your thoughts??

Perhaps I am too much of a penny pincher...

Well, as a tech. I'd personally pay the extra for the piece of mind. If I had your concerns for the speaker, I'd have thrown the grills on right away. As a tech, there is nothing worse than seeing something you've worked hard on get broken.

Regarding the microphones, soundboards, and stuff like that. Here is my opinion. You should always keep the stuff you have. The only time you replace is when it is broken or you can get an upgrade. But even then, you don't just upgrade for the sake of upgrading. You should really only upgrade when there is a need. If you will see no benefit from the upgrade, then it's just a waste of money. Also, if the upgrade gives you a benefit, you should decide if the benefit is that useful or if you can get by well enough without it.

For example. My computer. It's a few years old now. I built it out of mostly recycled parts that were left over when Dad upgraded his computer. But despite the age of the components, I can still play any game I want to and play it pretty well. Recently, I took part in the beta testing of a game to be officially released this month. The game is new, but I still got by and was able to compete with gamers that had much better computers.

So my point is that you should really only bother upgrading technology when there is a clear benefit. It's not penny pinching, it's called being satisfied with the bounty the Lord has provided for your present situation.

I know what you mean...currently...I have an athlon 900 @ 954 384 M Ram. Not exactly a flag-ship type system. But I really don't care much for newer games anyways...

But back when I FIRST got into upgrading, I had a computer able to play anything but I had a stinking 1 Gig Hard Drive.. I could play Half-Life and Unreal at high frame rates but I always had to uninstall a game, save the save-files before I re-installed and ran another game....That's just how much I hated to spend money on stuff I didn't REALLY ABSOLUTELY need...Even though in hindsight I think a new hard drive really would have been more practical than buying a Riva TNT....2 voodoo2's...and a Sound Blaster Live.....and tons of ram.....

Hi Kane17,

That sounds pretty scary; I'd definitely opt for the protective grill... As PunkStar aluded to: Peace of Mind is worth something. Rolling Eyes

Kane, I'd have to agree. The new hard drive certainly would have been a worthy upgrade. If only for the laziness factor of not having to back up all the time. I've actually got two 80 gig hard drives in my computer. One had to be brought because we didn't have a spare when I built it. The other hard drive contains an operating system I am experimenting with. Unfortunately, I've lost the cd, so I can't install a program I need to get onto the second hard drive. It's in the vortex of my room somewhere. Laughing

But that's just being a tech head. Probably not an upgrade. My point is that you don't need to be afraid of upgrading. It's good for your education. Just that you don't need to go nuts on it.
