Alright, brothers and sisters. Step right up and nominate your favorite modern day Psalm. What song or what performance of a song really, really touches your heart by deeping your relationship with your Maker? Only one nomination per participant please. And don't be afraid to go into detail why it moves you so. This way we can all benefit. Smile

My nomination is "Hard to Get" by Rich Mullins. This song to me is the most honest-and therefore courageous-struggle with the question "why, God?" i've ever heard set to music. It reminds me of Job and his trial. Like Job, Rich finally comes to the realization that some things are beyond knowing in this life. But he never rejects God, he keeps the lines of communication open so that even when #Mad he still maintains his faith. And at the end of the ordeal his faith is increased. All this set to a good melody! That's why i like it. Smile Be God's everybody-scott

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but:

Lord I Lift Your Name on High

Pretty generic song, but by far my favorite. Sums it all up.

Jeff-that's a great song. This is kinda off topic but to me, one of the measures of a great song is that you can impose different styles on it and it still works. I've played that song as a reggae song, as heavy metal and punk, as a sappy Christian radio safe-for-the-whole-family ballad, solo acoustic, the list goes on. Diving into a familiar tune with a different style is a great way to loosen a band up and laugh! Be God's-scott

I'm going to have to think about this one a little. To me, a psalm isn't just poetic; it's also poignant and references real, concrete things.

Well, since I can only officially nominate one, I'm going to float a few first. Mr. Green

The first one that comes to mind is "Wild Honey" on U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind. Second and third verses in particular.

Second verse (a la David):

Did I know you, did I know you even then
Before the clocks kept time, before the world was made
From the cruel sun you were my shelter
You were my shelter and my shade

Third verse (poingnant questions from God, a la book of Isaiah):

I'm still standing, I'm still standing where you left me
Are you still growing wild with everthing tame around you
I send you flowers, cut flowers for your hall
I know you're garden's full but is there sweetness at all

You can find lyrics for the whole song here: http://www.atu2.com/lyrics/lyrics.src?VID=9&SID=433

At the moment, I'd have to say Yahwah. From How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. To me, the song is about learning to be what you want to be. Wanting to be changed from a normal person to be a much better and kinder person. It's calling for help to do that because the person can't do it on their own. Just like us for God.

So thanks Mer for putting me onto U2.

Dang. You nabbed my second "floater". Wink

I love the second verse:

Take these hands
Teach them how to carry
Take these hands, don’t make a fist, no
Take this mouth
So quick to criticise
Take this mouth, give it a kiss

Also, the bridge:

Still waiting for the dawn
The sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean
This love is like a drop in the ocean

When I first listened to the song, the last two lines sounded like "His love is like a drop in the ocean." Then I checked out the lyrics on the inserst. Personally, I prefer to hear "His" instead of "This". Very Happy

My pleasure. I've always had a penchant for music that is real in the sense that it relates to our everyday lives - the good and the bad, the joyfull and the sad, the pretty and the ugly - because that's real life. I much prefer it to the vast majority of today's candy coated, happy-happy-joy-joy "Christian" music and Praise & Worship. There's a phrase that's applicable here - "So heavenly minded it's of no earthly good" - but I'm too tired to fit it in right now.

I know exactly what you mean bro. I've been listening to a lot of the music played at the youth group I've been going to recently. And I've noticed there is a lot of music like that (the happy-happy-joy-joy "Christian" music and Praise & Worship.). So much in fact that it all starts to sound the same. So it's good to hear a song with a more real life message.

"Do You who live in eternity...
hear the prayers of those of us who live in time?
We can't see what's ahead, and
we can not break free from what we've left behind.
I'm reeling from these voices that are screaming in my head...
All these words of shame and doubt, pain and regret.
I can't see where You're leading me, unless You've lead me here...
to where I'm lost enough to let myself be led...
Will those who mourn be left uncomforted?
It's just Your way and You are just plain hard to get."

this is the obvious first for me; five iron frenzy's 'every new day':

When I was young, the smallest trick of light,
Could catch my eye,
Then life was new and every new day,
I thought that I could fly.
I believed in what I hoped for,
And I hoped for things unseen,
I had wings and dreams could soar,
I just don't feel like flying anymore.
When the stars threw down their spears,
Watered Heaven with their tears,
Before words were spoken,
Before eternity.

Dear Father, I need you,
Your strength my heart to mend.
I want to fly higher,
Every new day again.

When I was small, the furthest I could reach,
Was not so high,
Then I thought the world was so much smaller,
Feeling that I could fly.
Through distant deeps and skies,
Behind infinity,
Below the face of Heaven,
He stoops to create me.

Dear Father, I need you,
Your strength my heart to mend.
I want to fly higher,
Every new day again.

Man versus himself.
Man versus machine.
Man versus the world.
Mankind versus me.
The struggles go on,
The wisdom I lack,
The burdens keep pilling
Up on my back.
So hard to breathe,
To take the next step.
The mountain is high,
I wait in the depths.
Yearning for grace,
And hoping for peace.
Dear God...
Increase.
Healing hands of God have mercy on our unclean souls once again.
Jesus Christ, light of the world burning bright within our hearts forever.
Freedom means love without condition,
without a beginning or an end.
Here's my heart, let it be forever Your's,
Only You can make every new day seem so new.

listen to their very last concert on 'the end is here' its the very last song they ever play. its an incredible moment, i wish i could of been there!

They have so many awesome songs and a whole album titles Psalms but I would have to say my latest favorite would be Waging War about sin and the battle that rages in us all.

another favorite would be Andrew Peterson's Silence of God.
