|

I'v been practicing really hard at the guitar and I'm getting bett. My mom though wants me to get a mic cause she can't hear me sing when I play. The guitar is loudar than my voice. Someone gave me a mic and I plugged it into my 10watt amplifier and it didn't sound to good, I don't know if it was me or the the amp(probally me). I don't even know where the mic came from. Anyway, I need an amp and mic that will help my voice carry well. I'm not a very strong singer even in choir when I had a solo they had the hradest time getting my voice to pick up over the mics. I don't remember brand of my amp, but Ithink I might need a bigger one. What would be a good wattage and brand mic for me to use?
Thanks for all the help from everyone at this site, my mom is really seeing improvments in my playing. |

In my experience, very few things sound good through a 10 watt amp.
Generally, guitar amps aren't designed for vocals, so you really shouldn't rely on one for singing. That being said though, I've gotten away with putting my voice through my bass amp and it sounded alright (but I have a really deep voice). But really, the best thing for hearing your own voice (when amplified) would be a PA. But they cost a lot.
As for suggestions regarding microphones. Shure do some of the best ones, but then can get a bit expensive. Depending on how good you go. I paid about $100 for mine, but that's in Australian dollars, it'd be cheaper where you are.
An even cheaper solution would be to not play your guitar so loud and sing louder. |

| The Shure SM-57 is probably the widest used and most versatile mic in the business. They are usually under $100 US new, and about half that used. I've never seen a guitar amp that sounds good with vocals, a separate PA is usually needed. |

When I first bought the amp they told me it wouldn't sound good if I used it for singing. I met a guy who used to be the lead singer of a local band in my area, he's really good. I'm going to talk to him and see if he can help get some amps and a microphone.
Now, what exactly is a PA? And when I go to buy one are there different brands? |

Here are some PA's. You'll get the idea. If it's just for around the house, you might consider a cheap Karaoke set-up? We bought one for the Youth Group last year for about $100 at Walmart...
