A guy at Church last night used my Seagull M6 to play and sing an old hymn, "Nothing but the blood". He told us that it was the first son he had ever played on the guitar in Church, he said he was seven at the time.
Got me to thinking, what was the first song you ever did solo at Church, or at least that you played and sang in front of a congregation? |

Hmm, I guess the first one I'd have done was some Christmas tune for my church's Christmas production. I wouldn't know which one though. But that was with the whole band.
My first solo would be when I was 17 and doing guitar lessons at another local church. At the end of every semester, all the students would do a concert. I performed a Christian song I'd written earlier that year (that one I posted up here quite a while ago). I have the performance on video actually (though I don't have the resources to get it into a postable condition, sorry), though I refuse to watch it as I don't really like the sound of my voice solo.
I find these days I am much happier singing in a group. |

I performed secular songs in public when I was a teenager in the 1960's. I was in church choirs, youth choirs, and multiple other ensembles at the same time. I played guitar for services in the early 70's. I lead worship services playing and singing to lead the rest of the congregation since 2005. But the first time I ever sang a song all alone in church was "Above All" as an anthem for the First Sunday of Easter last year.
I still haven't done much solo work since then, though I've been active in bands and as a solo worship leader.
Now that I'm living in Atlanta and no longer serve as a Lay Preacher, I'm thinking about putting a witness band together. I figure there are enough praise bands dedicated to the theology of Glory. What's needed is a band dedicated to the theology of Grace. |
