Hey bates 15, I noticed that you have a real deep knowledge of recording and sound. I have a question that you can answer, and i would be in debt to you. I want to buy a recorder for myself at home. I don't have a band or anything i just write music and i want to record my rhythem and vocals, then come back and record lead and fills, then come back with my piano, and so on. You know record diferant tracks for the samn song at differant times. Do they all do that are do none of them do that. Please help me with this.

You just proved you know more then you think Smile

80% of the music out now must have been recorded just the way you mentioned. Some people use the computer (that would be a good one for you to) and some use a harddisk recorder of multitrack recorder.

You can get some software and a good input divice for the computer and the sky is the limit (or actually the capability of your computer:) ) Record something like 128 channels on a P4 (3ghz with a 1024MB DDR) How many tracks you can recor at one time is also limited to how your computer is set-up!

Get a harddisk recorder with up to 24 channels (record up to 8 at a time) KORG have a 48 channel one but that is a bit over priced just yet!

Multitracks are usually about 8 tracks, sometimes 4. Remember, some of the best recordings made were recorded in one take! To tracks maximum. Maybe they even bounced the recorded material to a spare track to make anothertrack avalable but much more was not done 20 years ago!

Is your goal to make demo's or to make recordings you are able to sell?
What price range? Do you have a good mic? How many tracks would you want to record at one time? Give us a hint and Ill try to help you out as good as possible. remember, once you start recording, it can be very addictive!
