As Christians we live under the new covenant, and there are some who believe we need read only the New Testament and even some that feel if you just stay in the four Gospels you are ok. I am not here to divide, if the Spirit leads you to read one portion of the Bible for the rest of your life by all means, go where the Spirit leads.
On the other hand I find some amazing reading in the OT and this passage was passed along to me. Someone had mentioned to me recently "Well that's just how things are these days, we need to be flexible and adapt". Then the next day this passage was e-mailed to me by someone else, it was Air1 radio's verse of the day. I am not a big fan of the New Living Translation but in this case it sure seemed to spell it out nicely. Exodus 23:2 (NLT) "Do not join a crowd that intends to do evil. When you are on the witness stand, do not be swayed in your testimony by the opinion of the majority."
Remember, God is the same today as He was 4000 years ago. Popular opinion does not change what God says is right and wrong! |

That is an understatement. The Old Testamant is important so we know our history and can truely understand what blind faith is, and know for sure what happens to those who do not follow the word of God. In this day of so many shades of grey when it comes to morality, it is refreshing to read of the true simple nature of good and evil as spelled out in the OT.
Lets face it, the majority of people will not be entering the Kingdom OF Heaven. Just because we have a new covenant does not mean that we should totaly abandon the old one. It is the same but different. My best advice to anyone who is going off on tangents is to carefully read 1 JOHN. It speaks of this old and new covenant and false prophets. I have read it many times and I take great comfort in its simplicity. Besides all that, if we truely believe the word of God and love Jesus as our savior, shouldn't we enjoy reading and using the entire bible? Its not like we have to translate the Dead Sea Scrolls or anything.

Matt 5:17-18 (KJV) Jesus our Lord speaking;
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
I agree, the whole Bible is the Word of God. The book of Proverbs should be required reading for anyone in High School, or getting married, or breathing... |
