My church is sending me (and I'm paying to bring my son who plays trombone, guitar, mandolin, violin) to a 2 day worship music workshop in a couple of weeks with the likes of Phil Keaggy and John Standifer and other greats in the CCM world. Very Happy There will be guitar, bass, percussion, vocal, & sound clinics. Wonder if they will be able to host any brasswind clinics?? Some major mfgs will be on hand to demo their latest equipment. At the end of the 2nd day, Phil will perform in a concert that's open to the public.

Of course I will participate in the Keaggy and Standifer clinics. I'm not sure what else yet. Any questions you want me to ask???

Yeah, I have the question of the year for Phil, ask him which famous guitar player when asked "What's it like to be the world's greatest guitar player?" responded "I don't know, you'll have to ask Phil Keaggy..." Razz

Was it:
Jimi?
EC?
Jeff Beck?

Seriously, it would be fun to know the origin of that urban legend if indeed Phil knows...

What, no questions on technique? approach? equipment?

The urban legend ? I've seen him play a few times and I went to a short 1 hr clinic a couple of yrs ago. From what I've seen he is really a humble guy and I'd feel funny asking him. It was Hendrix according to CCM Mag.

I'll try to remember to ask about Amsterdam.

The Christian Music conference was held this weekend. I went to clinics on sound reinforcement (a lot on in ear monitors), a general clinic with Erick Hailstone on Guitar in Worship, Electric Guitar with Lincoln Brewster, Fingerstyle Guitar with John Standifer (very good, chk out http://www.praiseguitar.com ), Songwriting with Bob Kilpatrick, and a Guitar Master Class with Phil Keaggy; an hour and a half of casual question and answer and playing (sorry I forgot to ask about Amsterdam Embarassed ). The most valuable for me were John Standifer (the technique of minimum movement; left me yearning for more!) and Bob Kilpatrick on the hard work that must be put into songwriting and maintaining integrity in Christian musicians/music, and worship.

There were also clinics on Bass with Norm Stockton (WOW that man can fire up a bass guitar http://www.normstockton.com/ ), Drums and Percussion with Will Denton, Vocals with voice coach Roger Beale, and clinics for Leading Worship with Lincoln Brewster, Shane Everett, Shane Barnard, and Jami Smith.

On Friday there was a concert with Shane and Shane, Jami Smith, and Lincoln Brewster. Saturday night there were brilliant performances by Erick Hailstone, John Standifer, Bob Kilpatrick, Norm Stockton and Will Denton, then Phil Keaggy gave a relaxed nonstop 2 hr concert (with Bob Kilpatrick on 2 songs). I've seen Phil 3 times now and this was the best solo performance I've heard. A fabulous retreat.

I'm pretty sure that I read in a Guitar Player Magazine article on Phil that it was actually Eddie Van Halen who said that. FWIW.

In October I went to the Praise Guitar Workshop put on by John in Kentuky (12hrs all together). It was worth every cent and then some. The guy can REALLY play! And best yet, he can teach what he knows. A very good teacher, and man of God. I would recommend it to anyone. I hope he comes back next year! If he does not, I think we may try and host Him ourself at our Church.
He covers using a capo, and changing a song's key very well. Even if your a low level player, like me, you wil walk away know alot more.
From what he showed us, I have been able to write four songs and put music to them.

I have seen Phil 3 times over the last 15 years...each time he has gotten better! A truly amazing player and man of God.
