I actually like it ~Mindy~, I am not a huge country gospel fan but I do like it in metered doses I love the sound of a twangy Telecaster in the hands of someone that can play it well. I spend a fair amount of my practice time trying to make mine do tha same! |

It's a cool sound Nate, very unique and traditional in the southern/Bible belt part of the US. It's influence is felt all over the US and is unmistakeable once you know it. The Gaithers used to have a show called the Old Time Gospel Hour (maybe they still do...) that was filled with the stuff. Memories of it when I was a kid almost brings tears to my eyes.
God bless you too ~Mindy~ and thanks for bringing this up! |

Mindy, stick around and tell us about yourself. Do you play guitar? Electric or acoustic?
God bless,

Hello Mindy and fellow guitar enthusiasts. Among my early influences is Gospel (Southern, traditional, folk, etc.). It also has a lot to do with my work. I program and edit the music on one of our three networks, the Christian Classics, which includes a mixture of light Inspirational (Dallas Holm, Twila Paris, Martins, Bruce Carroll, etc.), Praise & Worship, Classic (Ruppes, Cathedrals, Ivan Parker, Lynda Randle, The Talleys, etc.), and I have one category just for Gaithers (Gaither Vocal band, Bill Gaither Trio, and The Gaither Homecoming Friends). Yes I do enjoy it, since it was among my early influences. I'm also blessed to get to meet some of my "Gospel heroes" occasionally. When the Gaither Homecoming Concert was here last March, I was given the opportunity to give the opening introduction. Although I enjoy a wide spectrum of musical styles, Gospel continues to be a major influence. I recently ordered some tapes with some traditional 'folk' style Gospel like "I am a pilgrim" and "Walkin in Jerusalem just like John". These are great traditional foundation songs and I'm looking forward to playing some of them. Happy Pickin'!
God bless!

...and yes Lance, the Old Time Gospel Hours still is alive and kicking.
But as you, I take it in small doses.
And you are right about the interest being more in the south. In Virginia, which I still am fighting that it isn't in the south, it is popular, and more so as you travel south...
Now southern rock like .38 Special and Molly Hatchet styles?....that's pretty cool.

| To tell you the truth, I learned guitar from old Dallas Holm albums....but my SECOND biggest influence was the HINSONS! My Pastor loved southern gospel music and he had all kinds of old hinson, statesmen quartet, cathedral, etc. albums he would play and when he wanted to sing one in church, our band would learn it. So I kind of have a history of southern gospel songs! I loved the hinsons because their band was way ahead of their time! They had the tightest sound of ANY southern gospel band today OR back then! Matter of fact, I have the hinsons LIVE album in mp3 format. That is one group I really respect as far as what they did to "modernize" the sound of southern gospel music. Today, a lot of groups try to imitate them, but I am convinced that there is only ONE hinsons! I like the new hinsons OK, but I don't think they sound half as good as the original group. I went to go see the original hinsons at a live singing in Dyersberg, Tennessee. Kenny Hinson was alive back then and Ronnie was still with the group. They sounded fantastic! And Kenny was a decent guitar player himself! Man....that brings back memories! |

I just stumbled onto this forum today, looks pretty cool. I post in a couple of others ususally. But this topic caught my eye.
I'm an old guy and yes I like the "twangy" stuff. I like singing So. Gospel because it usually has a good bass part and I love to sing that way. Lately, I've been doing alot of Bluegrass style gospel. I find it alot of fun. I do some Country style as well.
We're to make a joyful noise, and we all find joy in different things. What we need to do is appreciate each other's joy.
