I always thought it was because they wouldn't let them play inside.

Dave Brubeck Quartet "Live at Storyville: 1954". Paul Desmonds sax playing has, well I wouldn't say inspired, but influenced more than a few of my guitar solos.

Don't they do pretty much everything in the street there? Very Happy

A guitar teacher turned me on to Barney Kessel's playing with the "Pollwinners". Trio format with Shelly Mann (drums) and Ray Brown (Bass). Very good stuff with a lot of soul. I've got a Wes Montgomery compilation "Jazzmasters" thats very good. He plays a lot of popular songs (for the 1960's) and gets a great sound playing with his thumb. And the most recent discovery has been Norah Jones. She plays with a VERY Surprised mature sound for a 20 something year old. Her choice of notes, use of space and interpretive skills were a welcome surprise. Listen to her version of "Cold, Cold Heart", the Hank Williams song. She should have a new CD out any day now. Nice to have real music in this age of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake.

When I came to California, I wanted to play Jazz real bad.
Now, years laters, I DO
(play Jazz real bad)!

Knowing a little Jazz theory helps me negotiate more complicated Contemporary P&W songs. I understand where things are likely to go next on the neck, etc.

I'm no smokin' Be-bopper, that's for sure! But I enjoy "sounding Jazzy," at times. It can be a cool sound.

There's a hit on Christian radio right now with a female vocalist. I think the refrain is something like "...I run to you..."
There's a little George Benson sounding lick that shows up a couple times during the tune. That always perks up my ears.

Choices choices....
George Benson's White Rabbit (Little Train, WOW) was the 1st jazz record I bought followed shortly by CTI California Concert. Man those 2 blow me away. There's some incredible energy on Neil Larsen's (with Buzz Feiten) Jungle Fever, Grant Geissman's Good Stuff (There Will Never Be Another You!!!) and Charlie Parker - The Best of Bird. I gotta tell you that The Pat Metheny Group (white, self-titled) album's compositions/arrangements, and the fact they could pull it all off live while having fun with the crowd at the same time does it for me.

I went through 3 or 4 copies of;

The Crusaders - Chain Reaction

I just, flat, wore them out.

Still fav's are;
anything by the Rippington's (Russ is Mr. Taste)
Miles ( it ain't about what you play, but what you DON"T play)
JEff Golub- avenue blue

My list is a mile long, so I'll shut up now.

Oh yeah!
CRUSADERS!

Southern Comfort was my favorite album by them.
"The Well Done Gone Dry," was like in 11&2/3rds time!
Never heard anybody but Don Ellis do a time figure like that, and then the Crusaders did it too.
Awesome. Cool

I'm listening to Spyro Gyras new CD, The Deep End, right now, and I have to say, it's great. Not as "mainstream" as their previous efforts. There is even a little funk thrown in there. They must have a new bass player and drummer. There is one tune where the bass player is playing 32nd notes!!!!!!!!! You guys should check it out. No where near as commercial as previous releases.

F1-didn't "Chain Reaction" have Larry Carlton on guitar? Just gotta mention Larry's "Live" CD... has a 10 or 12 minute blues where he just rips (with the ultimate taste and tone, of course!). I remember seeing a picture of him holding his hand up in GP-the 1st finger on his left hand was bent in the shape of his guitar neck. Gotta love that. Be God's-scott

Scott,
Yup, Larry Carlton was on guitar. Still one of the smoothest around.
