I thought John Mayer played at that. It turns out I was right. That would have been a great show. Shame it probably won't get played in Australia.

Ditto guitarnut37, that's what I was going to say... There's alot of blues in the Psalms; and give Lamintations a try- some real bluesy stuff in there.

If your looking for a exellent Christian Blues Album get Glen Kaiser's "Blues Heaven".

No negative overtones intended, but I'm from the South and have had a long connection to the Blues. You can hear the Blues influence in many muscians and singers, but especially those raised in the South (SRV, Johnny Winter, ZZTop, Allman Bros., Lynrd Skynrd, etc).

When I was little, the time of Ben Franklin dime toy stores, I'd always stop on the downtown corner first and listen a while to a blind guy sitting on the sidewalk with his guitar picking and singing the Blues. And I'd always throw in some of my change into his hat. That was an almost every other Saturday morning experience for me when in town. Nobody bothered him, and nobody bothered me as kid listening to the guy.

The Blues originated in Africa from spirituals. So the Blues didn't originate here, but a later form of it did, which is called Jazz. My devout Christian mother raised me on Louie Armstrong, Count Basie, Glen Miller, and Frank Sinatra records, all jazz based music. We had a great music appreciation even before starting the 1st grade.

The Blues progression is a I-IV-V chord progression, which is a common progression even in old Classical styles. The difference is the dominant 7th chord that's used in the Blues for all three degrees of the I7-IV7-V7.

The roots of Rock-And-Roll is a mixture of Gospel and the Blues, both being connected in the South. Remember what some said about Rock-And-Rock when it began? The foundation of MANY Country songs is that same I7-IV7-V7 Blues progression! So it's not just about the lyrics, the instruments, and the beat. The actual Blues chord progression is the big foundation.

The Blues scale has what's called 'Blue Notes', the b3rd, b5th, and b7th notes of the scale. That's what gives it the freedom in expression for tension and release. And that allows harmonic feelings to come up from the soul. So when you're playing many Gospel, Rock, or Country tunes, the Blues foundation is already there underneath, and it can easily come out if you let it.
