Last spring I was asked to play acoustic guitar in a rhythm section, along with a fiddler and a full horn section to accompany a local Pipe and Drum Corp band at the regional Scottish Highland Tartan Ball. It was a freebie but we were well fed and those who wished got a couple of free well drinks. I really enjoyed it because my Dad was proud of his Scottish heritage and took us to Highland Games when I was a kid and we'd go to see Pipe and Drum Corp bands like the Black Watch when they came through town.
Today I was asked if I would play acoustic guitar in a rhythm section with a fiddler to back a single piper in a tribute recital/concert to Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen/Marines and Veterans to be held at a local University(!) concert hall around Veterans Day. I was offered $$$ but when I heard what the theme of the concert was, I said I wouldn't take a dime and ought to in fact be paying the "bandleader".
Wish my Dad and Mom could come, they'd dig it. I miss 'em but they're with the Lord.
Bro Brian i know exactly how you feel. This November will be our first year without my dad. His forte was country music and I'd spend many hours in our old basement listening to Hank Sr., Roy Acuff and Dolly with Porter. See, we were on base housing in Ellsworth AFB SD and he fashioned swings in the basement next to the phonograph. So i'd swing and listen for hours. He liked to sing harmony and play the harmonica.
