| I would never ever buy a guitar off of ebay! In buying a guitar, I want the best price and I want to hear it. The prices on ebay aren't much beter than a refurb. or scratch-and-dent at a store. And of course, you can't hear it. Not worth it... |

Well I will say this......if it had not been for ebay and a brick and mortar store with an ebay accopunt selling the PRS Mcarty I now have, I would have never been able to afford one! They were selling it to a walk in customer for $2,200....but I got it on ebay for $1,579 and it retails for $3,200. The prices on those are WAY too high in a regular guitar store and I got one in perfect condition(they wre an authorized PRS dealer also)....at almost HALF price! So again, I would never be able to get that at a regular guitar store. If I could have, believe me, I would have. So I am not saying that you cannot get good deals on ebay, but that you have to be VERY careful!
By the way, you say you want the best price? Then I hope you are in tight with somebody that owns the music store you frequent or have built up a reputation with them over a period of years....if not you may end up paying a whole lot more if you are a walk in. Simply because Brick and Mortar music stores have a lot of overhead. They simply cannot compete on the basis of price, because they can't afford to buy huge quantities of guitars like the mega chains like GC can or online dealers like MF.
However....This way of buying has it's advantages such as being able to play the guitar in the store, making friends with the dealer, getting to know the people and get extras. Things like that. Not only that, but Brick and mortar stores will usually go an extra mile to keep a customer comming back....espically in this day of internet and catalogs. (IF they are a good guitar store....If they are a bunch of jerks....THAT is a whole other story, but in this day of internet and catalogs the jerks are being phased out.) |

Here is the guitar the guy THOUGHT he was doing a second chance auction bid on:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3743305872
Pretty guitar.....too bad the guy that got ripped off will never be able to buy it, as it went to another person that bought the guitar in the real auction. |

| The dude who got ripped off was an Aussie like me. He's right, PRS guitars like the one he mentioned are massively expensive. I just looked it up on a guitar store here in Australia and it was worth about $4000 AUD. He probably payed about $1600 AUD. Good deal, shame they ripped him off. |

What is even more of a shame, is the fact that he probably scrimped and saved just to get the guitar of his dreams....only to find out that his dream became a nightmare! That was a good price even in US standards...no wonder he wanted to bid on it. I wish he could get his money back, but the guy that took it is long gone and I don't think the police will catch him. |

| It's horrible that happened to him, but I wouldn't ever go outside of Ebay to trade w/someone. I am extremely paranoid about who/where I give out my credit card number to, so if someone told me to wire the money I'd tell him "No thanks". Hopefully the con will get caught, I assume he reported it to the police or something. |

I have never bought anything off E-bay myself, but I look alot. A friend of mine at work shops there all the time. He has bought everything from a guitar ( that I now own ) to a back wheel for his motorcycle. If it's anything over $100, he contacts the seller and ends up speaking to them over the phone. Doesn't mean he won't get took, but he has had good luck so far. I can tell you he has not bought from everyone he talked too...
Seems like I have heard this family problem thing before. I read one where the guy said his wife was in the hospital having a baby, and the "seller" would cut the guy a great deal if he would just wire the money within the hour.
BTW If you talk to the seller on the phone, get his phone number and make sure it works.
Myself, I'm with CWC, I want to be looking the guy in the eye when I have him two grand for my guitar. |

Hi,
I am new here to this chat room, but I could not help but respond--I am sad by much of the mistrust I hear--it is aweful that someone was taken for a ride on eBay, but eBay also strives to ensure that if he had used Paypal and purchased the guitar through auction end, he would have been protected by eBay's/Paypal's Buyer Protection service. Unfortunately, not everyone goes to auction end, or they tend to deal off line for a better price in hopes the Seller is "desperate"--assuming his "Reserve Price" was not met. Anyway--it is a shame that Cons and Con Artists do exist.
Your new freinds from Missouri--Mike and Sue Moore
