Career choices

As my freshman year in college ends, I realize that time is running out for committing to a particular major. I went in thinking I was going to be in Microbiology, but I loathe it. I'm considering an ag econ major right now, possibly w/a minor in accounting. But when it all comes down to it, I can't see myself getting excited about any careers. Not knocking any certain careers, but to me working for 20 years doing paperwork etc etc seems pointless because there will be very little effects 20 years after you're gone. The careers I'm looking at pretty much fall under this category.

This spring break I was out in a field with all of my friends from H.S. at a party, and I went up and had a conversation with a certain girl. I was asking how her and a buddy of mine were doing (they were having a rough time, just broke up etc). I'm not going to divulge what was said because I promised I wouldn't, but I remember thinking I had went through the same things about 2 years earlier and I told her (in a nutshell) that she wasn't going to find what she was looking for if she kept down the same road. I'm not sure what kind of an impact it had on her, but it made me feel really good about myself. Not the self-righteous holier-than-thou attitude, but if I could bring someone just one step closer to where they should be, that's really cool. I feel like helping someone get closer to God is much more of an accomplishment than making 60k a year, because money isn't useful after you're gone.

I realize I'm at a crossroads right now on what I want to do with my life, and the time I have to chose is only about 6 months to a year. I don't know if I'm considering ministry for the right reasons (assuming there are wrong ones), and I will definately pray before I talk to people about it. I'm going to really think about this alot before/if I choose to do this. Just wondering if anyone has any input, because I figure this is a good place to ask.

Obviously prayer and meditation are in serious order here Smile

The strangest things happen when it comes to careers Jeff. When getting a particular major, often time people end up with great jobs that have very little to do with what they thought they would be doing. The education many times just makes people take notice and it opens doors to the stangest of places.

Agreed, do some praying about it. I'm sure God will lead you there eventually.

I can't believe you even need to ask about what to do with your life. The answer is simple my friend, music. Need I say more? Laughing

Lot's of good advice here. Jeff, I too think you have a heart for people. There are many fields where compassion is the #1 prerequisite. Ministry is definitely one. Medicine is the one I stumbled into. Now music....well let me put it this way.
There were 3 men in a sauna. The first one mentioned that he made six figures last year as a MD. The second one replied that he also did six figures as a lawyer. The third said that he was lucky to clear $16,000 after taxes. The first two turned to him and said "What kind of strings do you use?" Smile

Yeah, it think that's one of the nicer versions of the old joke about us poor musicians. But seriously, if your heart is in it. Then it doesn't really matter how much money you make. I'd rather do a job I enjoyed and just manage to scrape by, then make millions on a job I hate.

Wow, old stuff. I finally settled on getting a masters in accounting, my reasoning is that it'll give me the money to do the things I want to do in life. I definately want to be involved in a church, maybe teach sunday school, but not any preaching or anything. Sometimes I do well when I give a speech, other times I just bomb y'know. Surprised

Through some classes I've taken that taught about the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam my faith has really been strengthened. I always used to have this nagging doubt, but after looking in to how the religions work and where they came from and so forth, I have no doubt in my mind that Christianity is the "true" religion. Furthering that, I'm also looking into Catholocism.

also great to hear that youve had some resolution on the religion/faith front. Cause yeh let me tell ya following Christ is the way to go!
but your not alone in questioning your belief. i think we all do that at times.
