I figured it was time I try to make some sort of contribution to the site. I noticed AC and Punkstar have little tutorials, so here is stuff I've learned. Not much, albeit. I play alot of heavier stuff, so here is pretty much what I do:
The first key to rocking hard, is to know and love G. All of the variations can be combined. The most obvious variation is:
A 2
E 0
This is the primary thing to pound when rocking hard. That setup has defined the career of rock (see Metallica, Black Sabbath) for almost 40 years.
Example:
Here is one of my fav. things to go off of, this is a good jam song, because slight variations make it interesting.
EDIT: the spaces between notes didn't show up, but you can just finger pick this the best way that suits you, no song is set in concrete.
G 0
D 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
A 9 9 9 9 5 5 5 5 7 7 7 7 7
E 7 7 7 7 s 3 3 3 3 s5 5 5 5 5
Then kick into strumming mode with distortion to get a cool riff going on. You can use the gallop, strumming, or just beat the guitar to produce different rhthyms(sp?).
I like to do alot of fingertapping, but I don't have one to go with this song, so here is a little riff I like to do with alot of reverb/echo (the effect I use makes it sound really creepy, like it's underwater (kinda like "the warmth" by Incubus)).
E
B --------7-7 h 8--------3-3 s 5-------5----------5 5 5 s7s8 and solo
G -----9--------------5---------------7----------7
D --9--------------5---------------7----------7
A 7--------------3 ---------------5---------5
E
Very basic stuff, and I need to go to bed. Hope someone enjoys this. |

Hey! I know tapping!
Here is the song that I used to learn how to fingertap:
"Aerodynamic" by Daft Punk
It's actually techno, by two French dudes, but it's a really cool guitar line. I'd reccommend listening to it before trying to get the feel for it.
Ok, like the last one, I'm tabbing this out from memory (my guitar is at home), so....deal with it.
I use my right index to tap the 12, my left index to tap the 4, and my pinky to tap the 9.
e:-----------------------------------------------------------|
B:-----------------------------------------------------------|
G:-----------------------------------------------------------|
D:--12--4h9p4---(8x)-------12--6h9p6---(8x)-----------|
A:-----------------------------------------------------------|
E:-----------------------------------------------------------|
e:-----------------------------------------------------------|
B:-----------------------------------------------------------|
G:--12---4h9p4--(8x)-------------------------------------|
D:-------------------------14---7h11p7---(8x)------------|
A:-----------------------------------------------------------|
E:-----------------------------------------------------------|
This really helped me expand my reach, the 4 to 9 was really tough on me when I learned this (after about a year of playing). Anyways, this is one of my fav. guitar lines, enjoy.
Another good tapping song is "Lip Gloss and Black" by Atreyu. |
